Phiole is a freestanding outdoor sculpture connected to the adjacent fjord by a hidden pipe system. The empty cylinder is filled with water from the fjord at intervals. During the twelve-minute filling process, a column of water slowly rises behind the Plexiglas wall. When the cylinder is almost full, the pump stops and the water flows back into the fjord through the drain. During the eight-minute emptying process, a vortex forms. This cycle is repeated continuously, so that a new sample is continuously taken from the entirety of the fjord water and displayed in the cylinder. In analogy to the tides, Phiole so to speak ‘breathes’ the fjord. In a dynamic meditative process the installation activates an aesthetic dialogue between the viewer and the work, the fjord and the park, the water and the land, between nature and culture.
