„faults and folds”, 2021, ceramics, porcelain

Naomi Akimoto and Claudia Schmacke have created new works for the exhibition, which will be shown alongside a selection of existing works. Both artists deal with material and immaterial phenomena in their artistic work.
Movement and ephemeral phenomena play a central role in Claudia Schmacke’s sculptures, installations and videos. The exploration of natural phenomena is important to both artists, and both use clay (earth) as a material for sculptural form-finding.
In addition to ceramic series and photographs, Claudia Schmacke also shows the two video works ‘umbilicus’ and ‘dark matters,’ which embed the sculptural works in the context of her oeuvre and form interesting interfaces with the new works. One group of ceramic sculptures is a selection from the ‘faults and folds’ series, presented in two glass display cases. The work ‘debris flow #1’ is installed in two additional table display cases. Two further series of works are installed in the wall display cases: ‘debris flow #2’ made of porcelain and ‘gebrannte Erde #1’ (burnt earth #1), which was created using the raku firing technique. The presentation of the ceramics alludes to the presentation of archaeological objects. The sculptural forms form a counterpart to the photographs in the series ‘debris flow #1’, which appear like abstract landscapes of an imaginary planet.
